My 2007 In Review
This year had a 7 in it which meant it was supposed to better than other years. I love the number 7. I'm even kind of bummed that we are heading into an 8 year but after reflecting for a moment I realize that the 7 year isn't anything that can't be outdone. I still love 7s though.
So anywayz, some memorable things happened in my life this year and I am going to mention some of them. Maybe even all of them, I'm not sure.
- New Mexico
Best vacation of our lives. The kids and I took a road trip and we learned several things. Among them: 1) we LOVE New Mexico 2) we do great on road trips 3) we have lots of fun when we hang out together. Next year we've considered driving to Alaska, but we'll probably really just head over to Pennsylvania or something.
- Radiohead
I discovered Radiohead which is probably the second biggest highlight of this year for me, right after the New Mexico vacation. Many thank yous to Geoffrey. It would not have been possible without him although I'm not sure why that is. It isn't like I never heard anyone go on about Radiohead before but I guess it took him, sending me one of their videos from YouTube, to wake me up. Awesome. OK Computer in my CD player in my car right now. I love In Rainbows too and Logan says I have to get The Bends asap.
- Apples
This was the year. I finally took the Apple plunge and bought my very first Mac ever. My 20" iMac, to be exact. And for good measure I went ahead and bought my first iPod. A Nano. I knew it would happen some time and after 6 years of whining, it finally did. I'd like to thank Leo Laporte and the other The Screen Savers crew members that first inspired me as well as all of the friends I met over the past 6 years that reinforced my desire to get one. I'm not really one of those freaky Mac-heads**, but I am really glad that I have one.
**I know and love many freaky Mac-heads and I have nothing against them, I just know that I am not one of them. :D
- Star Parties
Star parties are the stuffff. We went to two this year (both times with my kids) and I discovered that I may actually love them too much. Seriously.
- Flickr
I also finally started a Flickr account so that I could start attempting to share photos once again. It is mainly crappy photos of the kids taken with my phone but my new motto is "blurry, crappy pics are a million times better than no pics". But that does not mean that I fail to see the value in good photos which is why I also learned how to rely upon talented and creative photographers for special occasions. Okay, well really just one. "Jeff Rocks!"
- Mad Scientist
My 7 year old (7 has a 7 in it) will forever remember this as the year of his greatest Halloween costume. It really was spectacular and it definitely needs to be mentioned in my 2007 year-end review. In case you've been under a rock on another planet, here it is.
- Twelve
My daughter turned 12 this year. I believe that having a child turn 12 is a very memorable thing for a parent, it definitely has been for me. It is a lifetime mile marker that seems to have really shifted my parental gears from focusing on the point of origin (childhood) to focusing on the destination (adulthood). I think that despite the shock of realizing how quickly this all seems to be happening we are transitioning very well. Oh and although 12 doesn't have a 7 in it, 7th grade does (she is in 7th grade). :)
- New Friends/Old Friends
I was very glad to meet Mark and Lisa and their crew this year. We've had a lot of fun this year and I hope to see that continue. This year also marks the year I ran into one of my closest friends from elementary and middle school. Hadn't really talked to her in 25 years but thanks to good old MySpace, we've been reunited!
- SxSW
This year I learned that I can go to SxSW all by myself and still have a great time (I usually go with a group of friends). I guess it worked out because I have made lots of friends in Austin and I ended up hanging out with all of them at one point or another while I was there. Highlights from this year's Sx trip were Stanton Moore, Lazlo Hollyfeld, Ephraim Owens, Second Movement, and the Enchanted Forest. As for SxSW '07 Brushes With Greatness, I had the pleasure of meeting Binky Griptite of the Dap Kings (as in Miss Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings) at IHOP @ 3am and I also met Adam Scone of the JJ Grey and MOFRO and Sugarman 3. It is kind of odd that I met both of these guys because they both play in the same circles but I met them completely separately. SxSW was mainly great but I was really sad about Hiromi getting snowed out, or snowed in or whatever you call it when you can't fly to your gig in Austin because you're stuck in 40 feet of snow. *sniff* :(
Is it okay to call Hiromi's performances "gigs"? I just did so I guess it is. :P
- XM
I bought an XM receiver for my car in April. Mainly so I can listen to Beyond Jazz, channel 72 (72 has a 7 in it). I bug the hosts via email on a regular basis to send them new music and suggest songs.
- HPMA
This was the first time I ever won an award from the Houston Press! I won for Best Jazz and I even got to go up on stage at the Houston Press Music Awards and give a short acceptance speech!
. . .
Okay fine. It wasn't my award. It was theirs. But I did go up and accept it for them which was truly a new experience for me. Thanks guys!
- Flight of the Conchords
I <3 Jemaine and Bret.
- 37
I turned 37, which also has a 7 in it :)

I just got XM radio for Christmas. Totally addicted.
Also, I'm the same way about years but personally I feel uncomfortable in any year that ends in an odd number. I thought I was the only number freak. Not that you're a freak.
Oh never mind.
See you at Mama Drama Con Queso.
