AfterRita
Well over here (pointing at Nova Lair) we made it through Rita without a scratch. I am also happy to report that my dad's house is still standing and has very minimal damage. They really thought it wasn't going to be there when they returned.
However I found out that the kids' great-grandparents (known as Ma and Granddaddy) from Buna, Texas, were not so lucky. They suffered extensive damage to their home and the surrounding area. They still have no power and are in for a long clean up and repair. This is very upsetting to me - they are in their 80s and grandaddy actually built this house with his own hands. There are many family members that are going to help out this weekend.
Here are a few photos of the damage:

WindyRita
Well it is approximately 3:45 PM and the wind is already blowing pretty hard. Kind of uncomforting since the storm isn't even supposed to technically be htting until 8:00 PMish - the eye isn't supposed to make landfall until 5:00 AM. Fun.
I guess I should probably be taping windows instead of blogging....
Among the few things dad was able to bring with him was a Sony Watchman.
He purchased it in 1983 for hurricane Alicia. Interesting, huh?
I never knew we had it - for some reason I have very little memory of hurricane Alicia despite the fact that we lived in the direct path of it when it hit AND despite the fact that I was old enough to be able to remember (12). ::shrug::

A glimpse of Fort Jamie*, courtesy of Rita the Pita:

Yes. I know the pantry is two crappily merged together photos - I decided to spend minimal time on this entry and the photos in it. So there.
Now back to endless news watching and preparation measures.
* My dad keeps calling this Fort Jamie. I'd rather call it Fort Rita, but he's my dad and what dad says, goes. :P
He and my step-mom spent 10 hours in traffic yesterday to drive 60 miles outside of Galveston to my house.

Google Enhanced Festivities and Toys
Because I am such a hopeless Google freak, I decided to type in the string "Happy Birthday Peyton" just to see what would come up. For those of you not *in the know* this is not as random as it may sound because I have a daughter named Peyton and we are celebrating her birthday tomorrow.
Anyway, what I found is so much more than disturbing than you could possibly imagine.
::shudder::
Also, I need help. If anyone knows how to locate an arcade console style Star Wars Pod Race game, please let me know; I live for this game and am not having much luck in finding out how to procure one. I must have one in my house and I need to know how much to save.
No, the LucasArts one (made for PC, N64, Macintosh, and Sega Dreamcast) will not do. I need to be able to use the cool controls as only found in the arcade version.
Either that or tell me where I can buy and get licensing for a pod. I think I'd have to get a personalized license plate for that one. Hmmmm, what to put on it, what to put on it.............
From the Utter Greatness file:
I am planning on getting one of these too.

Banh Mi Jones
Ok, so this entry is going to be about what I am jonesin' for today. For some reason I am craving vietnamese sandwiches. It is like I am going to die if I don't have one. The weird thing is that I've never really had one*. I have several friends that go on and on about them, so one day when I was in my local (usually american) deli, they had samples of vietnamese sandwiches and I tried one.
(*so I've had a bite, but not a whole sandwich)
To die for. It was so great. What is so frustrating though is that when I went there yesterday they said that they aren't going to be making them. The day I tried the sample, they were just testing to determine customer response and I guess the results were unfavorable.
But WHY??????
Grr. Anyway, so I am jonesin' for vietnamese sandwiches...also I could do with a trip to Niko Nikos - I crave their greek salad every so often as well (like now). What is UP with the cravings? No I'm not pregnant, ha ha, very funny. You're hilarious, you are.
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings will be at Continental tomorrow. Be there or be the lamest person in the Virgo Supercluster.
Please feel free to read my thoughts on Katrina if you are so inclined.
